Ever Have a Gut Feeling? Butterflies in your stomach?

Gut Brain Axis

Have you ever had a “gut feeling” about something?  It’s common to feel your emotions physically in your body, usually in your stomach.  That’s why you get butterflies in your stomach when you’re nervous – because your MIND is connected to your GUT through the gut-brain axis running through your nervous system.

The limbic system in your brain is responsible for your feelings and emotions.  If you could influence your feelings and emotions through the gut connection that your mind has with your body, wouldn’t you be manipulating your own brain to feel happier?  Would it even be considered manipulation, or would you be taking control back over your body and brain and telling it how you want to feel by feeding your gut what it might be missing?

Gut Microbiome

These are the questions that keep me up at night, searching for a way to connect the dots between the gut microbiome and our mental health.  Science is proving that the gut microbiome is responsible for more health related activities going on in our bodies than ever realized before, and we need to look more closely at what we are feeding ourselves to better understand why we feel sick.

When we feel something in the pit of our stomach, it’s because signals transmit between our brains and our bellies.  It makes sense, then, that if we make our tummies happy signals will transmit the other direction, letting our mind know it can relax and be at ease.
